The tapo client learns a newer login protocol for Rust and Python
The unofficial tapo library now supports TPAP, the newer protocol used by several TP-Link devices. Version 0.11.1 detects the protocol automatically, letting supported lights, plugs, hubs and cameras work without enabling the app’s older Third-Party Compatibility mode. The Python package wraps the Rust crate, so the same protocol support reaches both language APIs.

Why it matters
Useful for home-automation scripts that stopped working after device firmware changed the local login protocol.
More context
Try the released client with your specific device and firmware, using the existing device credentials. TPAP uses a password-authenticated key exchange; the article explains its advantages over KLAP. Handle invalid credentials and temporary lockouts explicitly instead of retrying authentication indefinitely.
Keep in mind
This is an unofficial integration, not universal device support. Some cameras still require the older mode; camera hubs use another protocol. The library also removes the oldest AES protocol. We have not tested physical devices.
