Jepsen finds transaction failures in tested ParticleDB builds

Jepsen found 96 issues while testing ParticleDB builds from 1.1.4 through 1.1.18.11.rc-22, including lost committed writes. Most required only one server and ordinary operations. Many were fixed during testing, but correctness failures remained in the final tested build. Orkes says a later release fixes the remaining issues; Jepsen has not tested that release.

A hash aggregation gets faster by waiting less for memory

Pivot reports a Rust aggregation experiment where partitioning data before grouping improved a warm single-core run from about 3.6 to 2.7 seconds. The extra pass creates smaller hash tables that fit better in cache. Hardware counters showed less waiting for memory, illustrating why a busy CPU can still spend much of its time stalled.

OmniDiff 0.3 reviews code embedded inside configuration strings

OmniDiff, a Rust diff viewer, now recognizes code inside supported strings and compares it using that language. Version 0.3.0 can highlight separate shell edits inside YAML and TSX edits inside JSON, instead of treating each string as one changed block. CSS class lists are compared class by class, helping reviewers see the actual change.

VOLTA uses AI to rank data after stealing it

Cisco Talos analyzed VOLTA, Windows malware that can send an assembled victim profile to language models for assessment. Its optional AI stage ranks valuable accounts and comments on security habits after credentials and sessions have already been collected. The documented workflow shows attackers using models to reduce the human effort of sorting stolen information.

Measuring an agent’s framework cost takes repeated runs

Nolan Lawson asked Opus 5.5 to build the same Pokémon application across 12 JavaScript frameworks, then checked functionality, accessibility and performance. Repeated runs produced substantial variation in estimated model cost and output. The experiment makes a useful comparison method visible, while its single application and model cannot establish a universal framework ranking.

More agent capacity can create more review work

Engineering leader Orestis Ioannou describes how coding agents expanded the work he could start while adding plans, questions and diffs that still needed his attention. Tasks that once seemed too expensive became tempting to attempt. His account highlights a daily constraint: generating more parallel work can increase the amount a person must understand and review.

Check which part of an email’s journey is encrypted

Fastmail explains how email encryption protects different parts of a message’s journey. TLS protects a connection, while disk encryption protects stored media using keys the provider may hold. End-to-end encryption aims to restrict message reading to the participants. These boundaries matter: encrypted storage does not by itself prevent a running mail service from reading messages.

A switch statement can become a table or a comparison tree

Xoranth walks through how GCC translates switch statements into machine code. Closely spaced case values can become a jump table, while sparse values can lead to comparison trees or mixed strategies. The examples connect source code to generated assembly, showing why the number and spacing of cases matter when reasoning about the resulting control flow.

Copper explores a procedural alternative to C

Copper is Marc Kerbiquet’s procedural language project intended as a replacement for C. It combines static types, basic type inference, generics and imports without header files. Its type inheritance can distinguish an age from an ordinary integer while allowing use where the underlying integer type is expected. This is an existing language to explore, with no verified launch date.

Datasette’s LLM plugin can inherit your existing default model

Datasette’s language-model integration plugin now falls back to the LLM command-line tool’s default model when no other default is specified. The 0.1a9 prerelease reduces repeated configuration for plugins that depend on it, including Datasette Agent. It is a small setup improvement; the author’s larger planned Datasette Agent upgrades are still upcoming.
