Vercel’s cache migration changes the bill as well as storage

Vercel is moving Next.js Data Cache into Runtime Cache without requiring application code changes. Previously unbilled reads and writes become chargeable after migration, with regional rates starting at $0.40 and $4 per million units respectively. Hobby retains monthly free allowances, while Pro draws from infrastructure credit. Existing Hobby teams migrate November 29; Pro teams will receive their own migration date.

Vercel · Oct 30, 2026

Why it matters

An automatic platform migration can alter operating cost even when application behavior and code stay the same.

More context

The October 30 notice says new teams use Runtime Cache immediately, while existing Hobby and Pro teams can opt in early. Inspect cache usage in Observability before opting in: pricing takes effect immediately. Storage allocation also changes from the former team-wide pool.

Keep in mind

Regional rates and plan allowances matter. Disabling fetch and unstable_cache caching increases origin requests and does not cancel the migration; it is not automatically a cheaper option.
