Rust on Workers takes an experimental step toward Tokio compatibility

Cloudflare has published an experimental way to compile Rust for Workers using Emscripten. It connects Rust libraries to the JavaScript runtime’s timers, files and sockets, with patches that help Tokio cooperate with the runtime’s event loop. The aim is to bring more existing Rust code to Workers, but this is still a preview with upstream work remaining.

Why it matters

Rust developers can explore whether existing asynchronous libraries fit an edge runtime.

More context

Try a supplied example in an isolated project and inspect its patch requirements. The result runs as WebAssembly, rather than as a native Rust process; blocking behaviour needs special handling.

Keep in mind

This is an experimental preview. Some Tokio changes are not upstream, and 1min has not reproduced the examples or measured compatibility.
