HackerTube builds video discovery from HN recommendations

Andrej Karpathy built HackerTube around YouTube videos recommended in Hacker News comments. His account describes filtering the comment archive, using models to remove spam, and organizing 6,454 videos across 150 topics. The site offers account-free recommendations stored in the browser and thumbnails taken from video midpoints, giving viewers another way to browse an existing recommendation archive.

Why it matters

A focused source corpus and explicit presentation rules can make a useful alternative discovery interface.

More context

Try browsing a topic on the public site; keyboard shortcuts, history and watch-later views are available. The author says the build used Claude Code, a Google metadata API key and a VPS. His reported two-hour development time describes his own experience.

Keep in mind

This is a running personal project, not an audited recommendation system. HN mentions reflect a particular community, and the author’s content-quality claim is subjective.
