Anthropic rebuilt source control for 30,000 daily merges
Anthropic says its daily merges rose from roughly 2,500 to over 30,000, prompting a move from Git to its internal Scion system. Scion keeps history, merges and other operations on servers while clients fetch what they need. The five-month migration targets an unusually large, agent-heavy monorepo; its always-online design sacrifices the offline independence that makes Git useful elsewhere.

Why it matters
Agent throughput can move the bottleneck from writing code to repository and CI infrastructure.
More context
Read the architecture case study before copying the design. Scion exposes repository operations through APIs so some jobs need no checkout; this is an internal system, not an announced public Git replacement.
Keep in mind
The throughput and migration results are Anthropic’s report about its own workload.
