A Wine port proposal brings 64-bit Windows programs to OpenBSD

OpenBSD contributors proposed a Wine port that emulates instructions using the x86 GS segment prefix, working around a platform obstacle to running Windows software. The author reports testing dozens of 64-bit Windows programs, mostly successfully. This remains a port proposal with important limits: 32-bit Windows support through WoW64 does not work, and the built-in tests are disabled because some still hang. Reported application success is not general compatibility.

Why it matters

A small low-level compatibility barrier can determine whether a much larger software ecosystem can run on another operating system.

More context

The October 18 mailing-list post includes a port draft and suggests a small 64-bit Notepad++ example for testing. Watch the port’s review and test-suite work. The author recommends a separate unprivileged account while further confinement is explored; Wine does not make Windows programs harmless.

Keep in mind

The inspected evidence is the proposer’s report and draft, not confirmation that the port is accepted into a release. Individual applications and graphics dependencies need separate testing.
