Commerce.com’s WebMCP rollout keeps merchant opt-outs at the edge

Cloudflare and Commerce.com expose storefront tools to browser agents through WebMCP, bridging each shop’s backend tools into the active browsing session. Hostname metadata lets individual merchants opt out even when thousands share a Cloudflare zone. Unsupported browsers or unavailable tool servers fall back to the ordinary storefront. WebMCP remains an experimental browser proposal, and the described checkout flow still requires the shopper to complete the purchase.

Why it matters

Platform-wide capability rollouts need controls at the individual tenant’s boundary, not only a switch for shared infrastructure.

More context

Watch browser support before depending on this integration. The preview uses a configurable backend MCP path and edge-delivered script, preserving the merchant’s existing tool logic. Evaluate the agent’s permissions and final user confirmation separately from tool discovery.

Keep in mind

This is a partner deployment and beta implementation, not universal browser availability. Structured tools reduce navigation ambiguity without establishing that every requested action is authorized or safe.
