Zig 0.17 improves incremental builds but changes tooling integration

Zig 0.17 separates build configuration from build execution and introduces a protocol that lets tools inspect and control the build graph. Compiler and ELF linker changes also make incremental rebuilds usable for most projects targeting x86_64 Linux. The release notes warn that the build-system change breaks existing ZLS integration while the teams work on restoring it.

Why it matters

Zig developers should evaluate faster rebuilds together with the effect on their editor and build scripts.

More context

Try the release on a branch; on x86_64 Linux, the documented incremental workflow uses zig build with -fincremental and --watch. Check the migration notes before changing a shared development environment.

Keep in mind

Zig remains pre-1.0, with known bugs and breaking changes. Incremental support is not equivalent across targets; the notes explicitly flag ZLS incompatibility. 1min has not compiled a project with this release.
