DuckDB 2.0 adds asynchronous reads and a migration boundary
DuckDB 2.0 LTS separates file I/O from query processing so more reads can stay in flight, including against object storage. The release also develops its Quack client-server protocol and integrates semi-structured VARIANT data more deeply. Migration needs care: older DuckDB versions cannot read database files newly created by 2.0, although existing files remain compatible when used by the new release.

Why it matters
A faster query engine still needs a tested rollback path when multiple processes share files or run different versions.
More context
Try 2.0 on a shadow workload and preserve existing database copies before testing new-file creation. The CLI’s agent mode adds compact tables, explicit truncation and structured errors. The team promises support through at least October 2027 and extends 1.5 support to March 2027.
Keep in mind
The team suggests waiting for November’s first patch for mission-critical workloads. Its new C API v2 still seeks field testing before being marked stable.
