Python weighs safer cancellation and an ABI tradeoff
Python’s Language Summit explored two runtime constraints: object-header compatibility blocks some memory optimizations, and cancelling threaded work safely remains difficult. Mark Shannon discussed reclaiming header bits; Daniele Parmeggiani proposed interruption-safe scopes that protect cleanup. The report records discussion, not shipped features: participants showed little appetite for breaking the existing stable binary interface just to free those bits.

Why it matters
These proposals expose the compatibility and cleanup costs behind seemingly simple runtime improvements.
More context
This September report is catch-up reading. The cancellation example involves parallel database queries where one fails and the other result is no longer needed; cleanup must still remain reliable.
Keep in mind
Summit proposals are not accepted language guarantees or release commitments.
