PostgreSQL gets a native BM25 search index extension
pgx-bm25 1.0 adds relevance-ranked text search through a PostgreSQL index rather than a separate search service. Its index pages participate in PostgreSQL’s logging, crash recovery and physical replication. Ordered scans can return the highest-ranked matches without a separate sort, while block-level score bounds let top-result searches avoid scoring every matching document.

Why it matters
It offers an option for applications that want ranked search while keeping their operational data and search index in PostgreSQL.
More context
Try the open-source extension on PostgreSQL 17 or 18 with representative documents and queries. It installs as bm25_native and builds with a C compiler and PostgreSQL development tools. The announcement documents phrase queries, field boosts and language-specific text analysis.
Keep in mind
This is a third-party 1.0 extension, not a built-in PostgreSQL feature. PostgreSQL 19 beta is tested but not a supported major version yet. Validate relevance, update costs and recovery behavior yourself; we have not run its benchmarks.
