OpenBSD 8.0 tightens firmware downloads and package lookup

OpenBSD 8.0 removes the current directory from the package installer’s default search path and strengthens firmware handling. Its firmware updater checks signatures on local checksum files, limits download sizes and rejects archive paths outside expected locations. These changes reduce places where untrusted local files or downloaded content can affect installation. The release also includes network-driver fixes and broader system hardening; existing machines need upgrade planning.

Why it matters

Small changes to search paths, signatures and archive extraction close concrete gaps in software installation workflows.

More context

The official 7.9-to-8.0 guide supports upgrading from the immediately preceding release and describes signed installation sets. Try the release on a local test machine first, especially before upgrading a remote system. Review configuration and package changes as part of the upgrade.

Keep in mind

Hardware support and configuration changes vary by system. The release notes describe implemented changes, not proof that every installation path is safe or every device works.
