Shopify is moving its mobile apps back to native
Shopify says coding agents changed the economics of maintaining separate Swift and Kotlin apps, prompting a move from React Native back to native development. Its Helix workflow breaks migrations into small checkpoints with tests, visual checks, adversarial reviews and human approval. Shopify also separates business logic from the UI so agents can test it through a fast CLI.

Why it matters
A practical example of changing architecture when development costs and feedback loops change.
More context
The team reports rebuilding and shipping Shop in twelve weeks while work on other apps continues. The reusable idea is the verification loop: reference the existing behavior, implement a small slice, and prove it before proceeding. This is an engineering case study rather than a reusable public migration product.
Keep in mind
Shopify’s experience does not establish that every team should abandon React Native. It still maintains two platform implementations, and the reported results are not independently reproduced here.
