D1 keeps database-management work away from ordinary queries
Cloudflare describes how D1 supports millions of SQLite-backed databases without routing every query through a central metadata service. Queries reach Durable Objects using cached routing information; Postgres remains the metadata authority. Background heartbeats repair incomplete creation and stale cache state. The design deliberately accepts eventual consistency in management work, so it should not be read as making every operation instantly consistent.

Why it matters
Separating query execution from administrative coordination reduces central bottlenecks in multi-tenant systems.
More context
Read the creation and failure-recovery flows. Each database has a Durable Object; retries use fresh IDs, while periodic heartbeats identify orphaned objects and reconcile routing metadata.
Keep in mind
This is Cloudflare’s architecture case study; it does not change the consistency guarantees of your own application transactions.
