Python’s proposed path to a supported JIT is withdrawn

The authors withdrew PEP 836, which proposed conditions for turning CPython’s experimental just-in-time compiler into a supported feature. Savannah Ostrowski says the team lacks the bandwidth to carry the current proposal forward, while still supporting its technical direction. The withdrawal settles the proposal’s status; it does not itself show that a released Python version has removed its JIT.

Why it matters

Python teams should distinguish a withdrawn development roadmap from a change to the interpreter they deploy.

More context

This is an October 19 development discovered through newer discussion. The proposal covers performance, compatibility, tooling and maintenance requirements. The authors said they would make the reference implementation available for others to explore.

Keep in mind

The PEP is withdrawn, rather than accepted policy. Its proposed targets are not release commitments, and this card does not establish a removal date.
