Rust gains a shared Windows backend with C++

Microsoft describes Rust as a first-class language for its internal engineering workflows. A key investment is rustc_codegen_utc, which connects Rust’s compiler frontend to the MSVC code-generation backend. Sharing that backend with C++ is intended to align Windows tooling, security hardening, debugging and cross-language optimization for systems that contain both languages.

Why it matters

Rust adoption depends on production tooling and interoperability as well as language safety.

More context

The post frames this as a common platform for mixed Rust/C++ systems. The backend can reuse Windows-specific capabilities that would otherwise need separate implementations. Watch the project’s availability and toolchain documentation before planning a Windows build migration.

Keep in mind

Tier-1 here describes Microsoft’s internal language support, not a new Rust target tier. The article is a Microsoft engineer’s account, not a benchmark or a general availability guarantee.
